1. Introduction

Does the introduction effectively begin essay, including thesis and preview of main points? Does the introduction include a hook and an introduction to the science concepts?

4 Excellent

The introduction of each paragraph does an excellent job of hooking the reader into the paragraph and the essay. It includes the thesis and previews main points. Excellent job introducing the science concepts.
3 Good

The introduction sentence for each paragraph simply states topic, has thesis and previews main points, but does not hook reader well.
2 Fair

Introduction is functional but not exceptional. May have thesis, but does not preview main points.
1 Poor

Introduction very weak, does not have thesis or preview of main points.
2. Supporting details

Does each detail support, or tell more about the topic? Evidence and information from the text is successfully included.

4 Excellent

Each detail supports, or tells more about the topic. Follow up sentences provide additional support. Any evidence from text (quotes) is successfully worked into paragraphs In addition, the evidence is properly cited. Most of the key concepts and terms are explained in a logical manner.
3 Good

Each detail supports the main idea but there are no follow up sentences. Textual evidence is accurate and supports claims and properly cited. Half of the key concepts and terms are explained in a logical manner.
2 Fair

Some of the details support the main idea, but there are some that do not. Another issue, or in addition to, is that textual evidence is minimal and/or does not support claims/ideas. There a some errors with citing text present. Only some of the key concepts and terms are explained in a logical manner.
1 Poor

The details do not support the main idea. No textual evidence attempted. Very few of the key concepts and terms are explained in a logical manner.
3. Logical order

Does the order of the supporting details make sense?

4 Excellent

The essay is developed in a logical order appropriate to the writer's purpose and reader's needs.
3 Good

Most of the essay is presented in a logical order, and readers should have little trouble following the supporting details.
2 Fair

The writer attempts to develop the essay in a logical order, but some of the essay may be presented in an order readers may find confusing.
1 Poor

The supporting details within the essay as a whole are not developed in a logical order.
4. Transitions (Linking words)

Do linking words, or transition words, connect details so that the paragraph reads smoothly?

4 Excellent

Transitions are present and effectively direct readers from one example to the next. They exhibit sophistication on the part of the writer.

Transitions are present and direct readers from one example to the next though not to the level of excellent. They may be basic and/or confusing.
2 Fair

Transitions are present but do not effectively direct readers from one example to the next. They may be basic and/or confusing.

Transitions are not present or do not effectively direct readers from one example to the next.
5. Conclusion

Does the conclusion restate the topic in a new way to tie the details together?

4 Excellent

The conclusion of each paragraph does an excellent job of summing up or restating the topic and tying the details together.
3 Good

The conclusion of each paragraph sums up the topic by restating it, but it does not tie the details together.
2 Fair

There is an attempt at a conclusion for each paragraph, but it doesn't restate the topic or tie the details together.
1 Poor

There is no conclusion. The paragraphs just end without summing up or restating the topic. It doesn't tie the details together.
6. Grammar and Mechanics

Does the paper indicate that the writer has control of the rules of spelling, grammar and mechanics

4 Excellent

The paragraphs contains no errors in usage, spelling, and mechanics.
3 Good

The paragraphs contains 1 or 2 errors in usage, spelling and mechanics.
2 Fair

The paragraphs contains 3 to 5 errors in usage, spelling and mechanics.
1 Poor

The paragraphs contains 6 or more errors in usage, spelling and mechanics.
7. Plagarism

Is the essay written in student's own words?

4 Excellent

There is no copying of sentences from the textbook or internet. If there is, the source is correctly cited APA or MLA style.
3 Good

There is one-two sentences directly copied from the textbook and/or internet and not correctly cited.
2 Fair

There are more than a few sentences copied from the textbook and/or internet and not correctly cited.
1 Poor

Plagarism is abundant throughout the essay.
8. Amount of paragraphs

Are all the sections from the chapter included?

4 Excellent

All sections of the chapter are explained.
3 Good

Most of the sections of the chapter are explained.
2 Fair

Half of the sections of the chapter are explained.
