Comparative Essay Rubric 
This rubric can be used to help to evaluate an essay that looks at three characters: Lennie, from Of Mice and Men; Charlie from "Flowers for Algernon", and Lexington from "Pig." Specific areas to explore include looking at similarities, differences and the obstacles the characters had to overcome.

Somewhat brief. An attempt to introduce topics is made but not developed enough. First sentence is dull.
Good

Fairly well developed. Several main ideas are introduced. First sentence has good "hook" to grab reader.
Excellent

Clearly developed. Main ideas introduced in a readable manner. Great "hook" sentence. Interesting: makes you want to read on.
Body Paragraph #1

Poor

Unorganized. No real topic sentence. Rambling. Grammar mistakes/spelling/etc.
Fair

There is a brief topic introduced. Light on supporting detail. No quotes or inappropriate quote. No transition into next paragraph.
Good

Topic clearly introduced. Some supporting detail. Possibly a quote or further supporting evidence. An attempt at transition to the next paragraph is made.
Excellent

Topic clearly and interesting introduced. Excellent supporting ideas, detail, probably a quote. Transition works well from previous paragraph. Vocabulary is strong.
