Good Paragraphs are developed with a clear main idea and details.	Excellent Paragraphs are very well developed and filled with interesting infomation. Well organized and paragraphs flow smoothly.
Information	Poor Very little fact or detail in the work. Very unorganized. Student does not seemed to have learned anything of substance about the explorer.	Fair Some information is provided, but there are gaps that make the paper hard to follow at times. Student may present an idea, but provides no supporting information.	Good Adequate information is presented in a clear and focused manner.	Excellent Paper is filled with lots of information about the explorer and his accomplishments. Paper is exceptionally clear and focused.
Conventions	Poor Paper has little correct formatting (margins, indentations for paragraphs). Writing is filled with spelling and grammar errors. Correct capitalization is lacking. Paper is difficult to read because of poor penmanship.	Fair Student uses some correct formatting. There may be enough errors in spelling and grammar that it may be difficult to follow at times. Writing may be a little messy.	Good Students uses correct formatting. Grammar and spelling are acceptable. Handwriting is easy to read.	Excellent Student uses correct formatting. Grammar and spelling are excellent. Penmanship is superior or paper is typed.
Effective Writing Style	Poor Student has no introduction or it is very weak. There is no real ending, student just stops writing. Transitions are absent.	Fair Student has introduction but it is very ho-hum or over-used. Student concludes the paper, but it is flat and uninteresting. Has transitions, but may be used ineffectively.	Good Student has a thoughtful and interesting beginning and ending. Transitions are fairly smooth.	Excellent Beginning captures reader's attention and ending leaves the reader with something to think about. Transitions are used to make the paper flow smoothly.
