Fair C
There is an argument, but it is predictable and does not push the reader toward critical thinking. Shows some fallacies in logic. The claim of value is not revelatory.
Poor D
There is no recognizable claim/argument or it is so weak that it is not compelling. Significant logical fallacies.
Organization

Excellent A
The introduction hooks attention. Body supports and explains why the claim of value is being made. The analysis is effective and well thought out and the argument is focused.
Good B
The essay contains all the essential elements of a strong introduction, textual support in the body, and a conclusion.
Fair C
The essay is lacking in one organizational feature needed for completeness.
Poor D
The essay lacks more than one feature expected for sound organization.
Claim Support

Excellent A
The paper provides sufficient support passages to strongly support the argument. Support sources show depth and significant effort in research.
Good B
The paper provides sufficient textual reference to support the argument. Sources are adequate, but not outstanding.
Fair C
The paper provides some textual references, but does not convincingly support the argument. Sources are not very strong, valid, and/or credible and do not work well in the argument.
Poor D
The paper provides no references, or the references do little to support the argument. Sources are missing OR invalid.
Writing Skills
20 pts
Excellent A
The essay contains excellent vocabulary, active verbs, and varied sentence structure. Paragraphs link with effective transitions to mark relationships. Writing is vibrant and interesting.
Good B
The essay uses good vocabulary and attempts to vary sentence structure. The writer uses transition words to link paragraphs. Writing is somewhat interesting, but not outstanding.
Fair C
The essay uses words correctly, but does not stretch for usage. Few transitions exist between paragraphs. Writing is lacking in vibrancy and interest.
Poor D
The vocabulary is low level and the writer does not link sentences and paragraphs for flow of language or meaning. Writing has no power, vibrancy, and/or interest to the reader.
