	Keep Trying 1 pts	You're Getting There 2 pts	You Got It! 3 pts	Awesome! 4 pts
Word Choice	Keep Trying Lacking expressive language.	You're Getting There Words are ordinary and lack creativeness. Example: good, big, happy)	You Got It! Some words are carefully chosen while others seem ordinary or misused. A clear picture is created.	Awesome! Words are carefully chosen. All strong words are used correctly.
Ideas	Keep Trying There are no details to explain your ideas.	You're Getting There You have some details, but you didn't give any explanation. It is difficult to understand your idea.	You Got It! Specific details are used to tell the event/idea. One or two more may help the reader visualize the concept and understand your idea better.	Awesome! Interesting and specific details are used properly. Details help the reader understand the viewpoint of the writer.
Sentence/Paragraph Fluency	Keep Trying Run-ons and fragments are seen throughout the piece. Reading the sentences can be challenging.	You're Getting There Sentence structure is the same. Sentences are short and simple without building any compound or complex sentences.	You Got It! Most sentences follow the same pattern but there is some variety. There is a mix between short sentences and complex ones.	Awesome! Beginnings of sentences are varied and there is a mix between short sentences and complex ones.
Organization	Keep Trying The writing is unclear so that finding the beginning, middle and/or end is challenging. No transition words.	You're Getting There The beginning, middle and end are harder to identify and one or more may be missing. Some missing and/or common/repetitive transition words.	You Got It! The beginning, middle and end are obvious and easy to follow. They appear in a logical order and include the use of appropriate transition words.	Awesome! The piece begins with a hook or a lead that captures the reader's attention. The middle is logical and the end is appropriate and clear.
Mechanics/Grammar	Keep Trying The writing contained more than 12 errors in spelling, grammar, and punctuation. The errors interfere with the essay or reflection.	You're Getting There The writing contained 8-12 errors in spelling, grammar, and punctuation. The errors may effect meaning or message. Errors make the story difficult to understand-	You Got It! The writing contains 4-7 errors in spelling, punctuation, and grammar.	Awesome! The writing contains 0-3 errors in spelling, punctuation, and grammar usage.
