Ideas/Content	Poor An attempt was made, but the ideas and content are not developed.	Fair Ideas and content are vague and are somewhat well-developed. The focus is demonstrated but not very clear. There are a few details that support the main idea.	Good Ideas and content are clear, complete, and well-developed. One clear focus should is apparent. Development and details are thorough, balanced, and well suited to audience and purpose.
Organization	Poor An attempt was made at organization, but the order is not logical.	Fair There is some order of ideas, but organization is not always logical. All paragraphs are not specific to one central idea. Few if no transitions are used.	Good Organization is well thought out and the order of ideas are apparent. The structure suits the topic, with a consciously planned opening and closing, each paragraph specific to one central idea, and transitions that tie the details together.
Grammar/Mechanics	Poor Verb tenses are often not appropriate and formed incorrectly. Student often uses incorrect grammar creating difficulty in undertanding written work.	Fair Some verb tenses are used appropriately. Student demonstrates basic understanding of grammar.	Good Grammar is usually correct and writing is easily understood. Conventions	Poor There are several mistakes in writing, spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and paragraph breaks.	Fair There are a few mistakes in writing, spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and paragraph breaks.	Good The writing, spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and paragraph breaks are almost perfect.
Format	Poor Some attempt is made to use MLA foramt, but errors are numerous.	Fair MLA format is used. Some large errors still exist.	Good MLA foratting is followed correctly throughout the essay.
