Introduction Hook Background Information Thesis	Excellent Introduction properly introduces the necessary information to understand the subject of the student's essay Introduction has a strong hook, background info. leading to the thesis, and a thesis that is located at the end of the paragraph.	Proficient Essay is missing one of the components required for the introduction. Introduction almost completely introduces any necessary information - may have a little unnecessary information.	Average Essay is missing two of the components for the introduction. Introduction has more unnecessary than necessary information when introducing the subject of their argument Hook could be stronger to grab the reader's attention.	Poor Essay is missing more than two components for the introduction Introduction is too short in the sense of introducing the argument of the paper. Introduction contains too much filler rather than getting straight to the point. Location of thesis is unclear
Thesis Clear topic and opinion 3 clear reasons as topics for the body paragraphs	Excellent Thesis topic is clear, arguable, focused, and supported by 3 reasons/examples. Thesis clearly shows what the subject of the paper is, the argument, and what each body paragraph is going to be about.	Proficient Thesis has something missing. Thesis topic is clear, but the support of the 3 reasons/examples are too similar.	Average Thesis lacks two strong reasons/examples. Thesis needs more clarity, but the thesis can be argued.
