Topic Sentence	Great = A The topic sentence is clear and imaginative. The sentence draws the reader's attention.	Good = B The topic sentence is clear but dull and unoriginal.	Fair = C/D The topic sentence is difficult to understand.	Poor = D/F There is no discernable topic sentence.
Evidence	Great = A More than 3 pieces of evidence are used to back-up the topic sentence. The evidence is thoughtfu; and well explained.	Good = B Three pieces of evidence were used to back-up the topic sentence. The evidence is unoriginal but well explained.	Fair = C/D Two pieces of evidence were used to back-up the topic sentence. The evidence is unoriginal and/or is not well explained.	Poor = D/F Only one piece of evidence was used to back-up the topic sentence. The evidence is unoriginal AND not well explained.
Transitions	Great = A The paragraph is well organized and easy to follow. Transitions are used to guide the reader.	Good = B The paragraph is organized but the train of thought is difficult to follow. Transitions are used sporadically.	Fair = C/D The paragraph is unorganized and hard to understand. Transitions are used ineffectively.	Poor = D/F There is no organization. Transitions are not used.
Conclusion	Great = A The concluding sentence(s) demonstrate a deeper understanding of the topic. Insight into the topic is clear	Good = B The concluding sentence(s) show an understanding of the topic but but insight is not particularly deep.	Fair = C/D There is a concluding sentence but it does not demonstrate more insight than the original topic sentence.	Poor = D/F There is no clear conclusion. The paragraph ends abruptly.
