Writing Process The students will use Microsoft Word to write and edit their rough drafts. They will confer with a partner or group to complete the revision and editing process. They will make necessary changes using Word and print their final versions of their vacation experiences.	Unacceptable The student does not participate in the activity at all or does not complete the activity.	Poor The student completes a rough draft using Word, but does not revise and edit his/her own work nor does he/she assist others in revising and editing their work.	Good The student completes a rough draft using Word, but either does not revise and edit his/her own work or does he/she assist others in revising and editing their work.	Great The student completes a rough draft using Word, revises and edits his/her own work, and assists others in revising and editing their work.
Publishing The students will use Microsoft Word to print their final version of their vacation stories. They will share their stories orally and then have the hard copies complied into a class book. Those who wish can also publish their writing on the class website or blog or on Writers’ Window.	Unacceptable The student does not participate in the activity at all or does not complete the activity.	Poor The student uses Microsoft Word to print the final version of his/her vacation stories, but does not share his/her story orally.	Good The student uses Microsoft Word to print the final version of his/her vacation story and shares his/her story orally.	Great The student uses Microsoft Word to print the final version of his/her vacation story and shares his/her story orally. The student also published his/her story on the web.
Prior Knowledge The students will find a map and directions to Edisto Beach and view a virtual tour of The Pink House.	Unacceptable The student does not participate in the activities at all or does not complete the activities.	Poor The student does not participate in his/her group or does not complete the activities. (Does one, but not both.)	Good The student participates in his/her group and completes the activities.	Great The student is a group leader who helps others and completes the activities.
Text Comprehension The students will read and discuss the book The Pink House. The students will compare and contrast the difference between a low country beach house vacation then and now.	Unacceptable The student does not participate in the reading and the class discussion.	Poor The student does not participate in either the reading or the class discussion. (Participates in one but not both)	Good The student participates in both the reading and the class discussion.	Great The student is an active and energetic participant in both the reading and the class discussion.
Research The students will research the author Kate Salley Palmer and answer questions about her.
