Variables for fair testing

Variables of the experiment to keep it a fair test.

Good

Student has documented which variables will be kept the same, observed or changed correctly.
Fair

Student has documented two variables that will be kept the same, observed or changed correctly.
Poor

Student has documented one variable that will be kept the same, observed or changed correctly.
Incomplete

Student has not stated or did not correctly state which variable will be kept the same, observed or changed correctly.
Predictions

Predictions of whether a material would rot or not.

Good

Students made predictions for all the materials and provided accurate reasons for their predictions.
Fair

Students made predictions for most (>3) of the materials and provided reasonable arguments for their predictions.
Poor

Students made predictions a few (< 3) of the materials and/or provided poor reasons for their predictions.
Incomplete

Students did not make predictions for the materials, nor provide reasons for their predictions.
Measurements

Correctly measured the weights of the samples in grams.

Good

Both weights of the samples before and after the experiment were documented accurately to 2 decimal points AND in grams.
Fair

Most (>80%) of the sample weights before and after the experiment were documented accurately to 2 decimal points AND in grams.
Poor

About half of the sample weights before and after the experiment were documented accurately to 2 decimal points AND in grams.
Incomplete

A large proportion (> 70%) of sample weights were missing AND/OR not accurately measured in grams.
Documentation

Supplied photos/drawings of samples before and after the experiment.

Good

Sketches/photos are detailed, and draw attention to the subtle changes in the sample size/quality.
Fair

Sketches/photos show some effort to represent observed structural changes.
Poor

Sketches/photos show little effort to represent observed structural changes.
Incomplete

No sketches/photos were supplied.
Data Tables/Graphs

Correctly labelled and title graph showing differences in weight for each sample.

Good

Data tables and graphs present. Axes were labelled correctly with correct units on the Y-axis. Data was represented accurately and not misrepresented. A title was supplied. Calculations (W1-W2) were correct and correctly represented.
Fair

Data tables and graphs present. At least one axis was labelled correctly with correct units on the Y-axis. Data was represented accurately and not misrepresented. A title was supplied. Calculations (W1-W2) were correct for most of the samples and correctly represented.
Poor

Data tables w/o graph or graph w/o data table. Axes were labelled incorrectly with incorrect units on the Y-axis. Data was not represented accurately and misrepresented. Calculations (W1-W2) were incorrect for most of the samples.
Incomplete

No data tables or graphs were supplied.
Discussion

Discussion of results vs. predictions.

Good

Correctly states which sample decomposed the most and whether it matched their prediction. Their discussion supported their conclusion and mentioned the physical properties of the materials.
Fair

Correctly states which sample decomposed the most and whether it matched their prediction. Their discussion supported their conclusion, but did not mention the physical properties of the materials.
Poor

Either incorrectly stated which sample decomposed the most or whether it matched their prediction or not. Their discussion did not support their conclusion and did not mention the physical properties of the materials.
Incomplete

No discussion given.
Overall Presentation

Good

Strong visual appeal and care given to construction and presentation of journal.
Fair

Writing and drawings were accurate, but not a lot of effort was given to the overall presentation.
Poor

Presentation is accurate, but writing is unclear and drawings/photos were poor.
Incomplete

No effort to present documentation in journal form.
