The learner will provide the main characters, the setting, and give a written and oral description of the key points of the beginning, middle, and end of a story by completing a story map.

beginning of story	Emerging Student tries, but is unable to tell how the story began.	Devloping Student can give 1 detail from the beginning of the story, but can not state the key point... What is the problem?	Applying Student can give key elements from the beginning of the story, including the problem or situation.	Innovating Student can express all key elements from the beginning of the story, including the problem, and describe how it introduces the story.
middle of story	Emerging Student tries, but is unable to tell events from the middle of the story.	Devloping Student can give 1 event from the middle of story, but may leave out the key points, or what the characters do to solve the problem.	Applying Student can give key elements from the middle of the story, which tell what the characters are doing to solve the problem.	Innovating Student can identify all key elements from the middle of the story and can express why they are important to the story.
end of story	Emerging Student tries, but is unable to tell the end of the story.	Devloping Student can give events from the end of story, but leaves out the key point, or how the problem is solved.	Applying Student can give key elements from the end of the story, including how the problem is solved.	Innovating Student can correctly identify all key elements from the ending of the story and describe how they conclude the action.
Setting	Emerging Student tries, but is unable to give even one correct setting element.	Devloping Student can provide one element of the setting.	Applying Student can can provide multiple details of the setting, where and when.	Innovating Student can provide multiple details of the setting and explain how the setting is important to the plot, or what happens in the story.
Character	Emerging Student tries, but is unable to name one character from the story.	Devloping Student can name one or more characters from the story, but cannot tell who the main character(s) is.	Applying Student can name the main character(s) and supporting characters that are important to the story.	Innovating Student can identify the main character(s) and the important supporting characters. She/He can also explain how the main character is important to the story.
