Contrast Essay Rubric

Students were to write an essay using 2 articles as their base texts. They were to compare and contrast the two articles.

	Effective Reader understands and easily follows the writer’s expression of ideas. (N/A)	Adequate Reader understands<BR> writer’s ideas. (N/A)	Marginal Reader occasionally has<BR> difficulty understanding<BR> or following the writer’s ideas. (N/A)	Inadequate Reader has difficulty identifying or following the writer’s ideas. (N/A)
Organization	Effective Establishes a clear and logical organization using proper essay structure. Essay has 4 paragraphs: introduction statement , 3 body paragraphs, and conclusion.	Adequate Uses an identifiable<BR> organizational plan. with proper essay structure. Essay may only have 3 paragraphs but has a clear introduction and conclusion.	Marginal Shows some evidence of an organizational plan with an attempt at an essay structure but may have errors (i.e. no indentation and minimal paragraphing).	Inadequate Fails to organize ideas.
Development & Details	Effective Achieves coherent summaries developed with a topic sentence, specific and relevant details and examples from text. The contrast paragraph utilizes quotes which are relevant to contrast statements .	Adequate Has focused but occasionally uneven development of summaries ; incorporates a topic sentence with some specific detail from the texts. Develops contrast essay using quotes, though not clearly related or clearly relevant.	Marginal Has some development but lacks specific details;summary paragraphs not complete.
