Exceptional statement of position.
High B
Has a clear introduction that grabs audience attention. States a clear opinion or point of view (POV). Summarises what will be dicussed in the following paragraphs.
Sound C
Has a somewhat clear introduction but does not grab the audience's attention. States an opinion or point of view.
Developing D
Very little introduction to explain the argument.<BR>

Introduction is not clear and there is no opinion statement.
Arguments
Outstanding A
Sophisticated level of arguments with detailed supporting evidence.
High B
Facts and reasons supporting POV are very convincing and are presented in order of importance. Each paragragh is planned well - discussing a particular fact.
Sound C
At least three clear arguments with short point followed by logically sequenced elaborating sentences. Facts and reasons supporting POV, presented in reasonable order.
Developing D
Two - three arguments, each including a short point and some elaboration. Some facts and reasons to support POV but not convincing. Some not relevant or connected to the topic.
Limited E
Arguments are weak and do not show strong support of POV. Paragraphs are non-identifiable or contain too many different ideas. No short point and elaboration.
Restate Position
Outstanding A
Outsanding conclusion - persuades the reader into action.
High B
The conclusion summarizes the facts and reasons provided in the pararaphs and gives a persuasive call to action. The writer makes a strong statement that closes the letter.
Sound C
The conclusion summarizes the facts and reasons. A closing statement completes the exposition.
Developing D
The conclusion summarizes the facts and reasons but may be somewhat weak. A closing statement is not represented.
Limited E
The conclusion is weak or missing. It does not summarize the reasons or make a closing statement.
Modality
Outstanding A
Outstanding application of modality.
High B
Persuasive language clearly presents the argument and offers supporting evidence.<BR>
Highly emotive words express feelings and good use of effective time connectives.
Sound C
Some persuasive language to support the argument and emotive words used to express feelings. Uses time connectives. Beginning to use language devices - rhetorical questions, etc.
Developing D
Persuasive language is not very convincing. Uses simple emotive words and some time connectives.
Limited E
Lacking in persuasive language and little or no use of emotive words. No time connectives evident.
Grammar and punctuation
Outstanding A
Outstanding use of puncutation, tense and spelling. A sophisticated balance of simple, compound and complex sentences.
High B
The writing is carefully checked and is easy to read. Most difficult words spelt correctly. Appropriate punctuation. Combination of simple, compound and complex sentences.
Sound C
Uses a range of well-structured sentences, beginning to include complex sentences. Correct simple punctuation evident (commas, full stops). Consistent present tense.
Developing D
The writing has correctly formed sentences, however some do not flow or connect well. There are some spelling or punctuation mistakes. Some inconsistencies in tense.
Limited E
Sentences are poorly written. The writing contains many spelling mistakes and little or no attention is given to punctuation. No consistent use of tense evident.

Outstanding planning demonstrated.
High B
Detailed planning.
Sound C
Sound planning displayed. (Structure/grammar)
