Play Rubric
Students will write a play with at least 2 acts and at least 3 characters. Play will include: a clear setting; a clear beginning, middle and end (including exposition, climax and denouement); dialogue specific to each character; and a sympathetic protagonist who experiences a compelling conflict/resolution and changes as a result of his or her experience.

Good
The protagonist is either believable or sympathetic, but not both. Inconsistent use of distinguishable dialogue to individualize characters. There is an antagonist, but he/she/it is not a strong opponent.
Excellent
The protagonist is both believable and sympathetic. The protagonist has at least one distinguishable characteristic. Dialogue reflects individuality of each character. The antagonist is a strong opponent.
Scenes and Settings
Poor
The play's setting (place and time) is unclear. The play does not contain at least 2 scenes. Scene and setting details are neither specific, concrete, nor particular.
Good
The play's location and/or time period are not well defined.
The play's setting is described, but the details are not relevant to the plot. Scene and setting details are present but non- specific.
Excellent
The play's local and time period are well defined and described at the beginning of the play, with details that are important to the plot. Scene and setting details are specific, concrete, and particular.
