Students are to write a five paragraph essay about the three things in their life that they cannot live without.

Introduction 10 pts	Poor The student does not have a grabber and merely states, "This is my essay and I will be discussing..."	Fair The student has a simple "grabber". The thesis statement is clear.	Good The student has a catchy "grabber" or oomph that engages the reader. The thesis statement is written clearly.
Body Paragraph 1 10 pts	Poor Student is missing many/all of these items: 1) Topic sentence 2) Adequate supporting details 3) Clincher 4) Transitions.	Fair Student includes several of the following items: 1) Topic sentence 2) Adequate supporting details about why they can't live without this thing. 3) Clincher 4) Transitions	Good Student includes each of the following items: 1) Topic sentence 2) Adequate supporting details about why they can't live without this thing. 3) Clincher 4) Transitions

Conclusion 10 pts	Poor Student ended essay abruptly or simply copied their thesis verbatim. Student used "In conclusion" or "In summary".	Fair The conclusion is recognizable and ties up almost all the loose ends.	Good The conclusion is strong and leaves the reader with a feeling that they understand what the writer is "getting at."
Mechanics 10 pts	Poor Student makes more than six errors in grammar, spelling, and/or punctuation that distract the reader from the essay.	Fair Student makes six or fewer errors in grammar, spelling, and/or punctuation, but the paper is still easy to read.	Good Student made no mistakes in grammar, spelling, and/or punctuation, so the paper is exceptionally easy to read.
