Opinion Essay

Students will create an opinion essay introducing their Frindle word and then stating why their word should be added to the dictionary. Students will use a minimum of 3 paragraphs.

Good/Fair Students had an introductory paragraph that had a weak hook, stated their Frindle word, but lacked information on what they would be convincing in their body paragraph.	Excellent Students had an introductory paragraph that had an effective hook, stated their Frindle word, and stated what they would be convincing in their body paragraph.
Body Paragraph	Needs Improvement Students body paragraph was missing several key elements.	Good/Fair Students stated why their Frindle word should be added to the dictionary, but failed to back their opinion up with reasons.	Excellent Students had a body paragraph that stated several reasons why their Frindle word should be added to the dictionary and used those reasons to back up their opinion.
Closing Paragraph	Needs Improvement Students closing paragraph was missing several key elements.	Good/Fair Students closing paragraph was weak with key details that summarized the purpose of the essay.	Excellent Students' closing paragraph effectively summarized the purpose of the essay and included a closing sentence.
Paragraph formatting	Needs Improvement Students were missing at least one paragraph and/or sentences were not strong and paragraphs were not indented.	Good/Fair Students had a minimum of three paragraphs, but the sentences were not strong and/or they did not indent paragraphs.	Excellent Students had a minimum of three paragraphs: introduction, body, and closing. Students used correct paragraph format. All sentences were strong.
