  Expert

I understand it well and I could thoroughly teach it to someone else.

(N/A)

Practitioner

I can mostly do it by myself but I sometimes mess up and get stuck.

(N/A)

Apprentice

I'm starting to get it but I still need someone to coach me through it.

(N/A)

Novice

I'm just starting to learn this and I don't really understand it yet.

Ideas

Telling the reader your message

Expert

It all makes sense. My reader will learn a lot. My ideas are really clear. This is just what I wanted to say! I have good, juicy details including explanations and specific examples.
Practitioner

My reader will get the general idea. I need to add some details but I'm working on it. The reader might have some questions. My work TELLS, but it doesn't SHOW very clearly.
Apprentice

I'm afraid me reader won't follow this. It's hard to get started. I'm not sure what my topic is...or maybe my topic is too big or too small.
Novice

The picture is not very clear. I need more time to think.
Organization

Making sure your ideas flow logically from beginning to end

Expert

I know where I'm going. My opening will hook you and the ending really works. Both the reader and I can see just how all the parts fit together.
Practitioner

The middle makes sense, but my work plods along. My opening is OK. My paper is pretty easy to follow. Maybe I need to move some things around. The ending doesn't grab me--or the reader--just yet.
Apprentice

What should I tell first? What comes next? Help! Which pieces go together? I don't know where I'm headed. How do I end this?
Novice

How do I begin? This is confusing.
Voice

Putting yourself in your writing

Expert

It's clear that I wrote this because it sounds like me. This is what I think. I'm speaking right to the reader. My words might make you laugh or cry. This topic matters to me. I love this topic!
Practitioner

I hear a bit of me in the writing. I'm hiding my feelings and ideas a little. This topic is OK. I'm trying to speak to the reader. I'm starting to have fun in a few places.
Apprentice

I'm not speaking to the reader--yet. I don't hear myself in this paper. I'm not sold on this topic.
Novice

This topic is BORING! I wish I didn't have to do this--and it shows in my writing.
Word Choice

Playing with language

Expert

My words paint a picture. My words make the message clear. I like the way my words sound and feel. I've used the best words in the best order.
Practitioner

I need more imagination here. Some of the words and phrases are great, but others need work. Some words are really vague. These are some of the first words I thought of.
Apprentice

There is probably a better way to say it, but I haven't changed much from my first draft. These words aren't my favorites.
Novice

The words I've used don't paint a picture in your mind. Some of my words don't make sense to me when I read them over. These words just don't make sense.
Sentence Fluency

Listening to the sound of your writing

Expert

My paper is easy to read out loud. Some sentences are long and stretchy; others are short and snappy. I like the sound of this paper--it has rhythm! My sentences begin in several different ways.
Practitioner

A lot of my sentences begin the same way. I wish my paper sounded a little smoother in places. There are lots of choppy little sentences, one after another. MY sentences are all about the same length. It's pretty easy to read out loud if you take your time.
Apprentice

HELP! Some of these sentences don't make sense. My paper is hard to read out loud--even for me!
Novice

I can't tell where a new sentences begins. Every word is strung together in one endless sentences. My paper is nearly impossible for anyone to read aloud.
Conventions

Editing your writing

Expert

Punctuation smoothly guides the reader. The grammar contributes to clarity and style. Capitals are handled well. "Clean copy." Paragraphing complements the organization. Spelling is mostly correct--even on harder words. Only light editing is needed--at the most.
Practitioner

My spelling is correct on common words. Simple things are done well. Paragraphing was attempted but I could improve. There are minor problems in grammar/usage. I hastily edited.
Apprentice

Punctuation is basically correct. Capitals are correct at the beginning of sentences and names, but not in trickier places. There are numerous errors. I couldn't publish this yet.
Novice

Paragraphing is random or not present. Errors are extremely distracting. This piece is not edited. I'm struggling. The reader has to translate to get the meaning.
Presentation

Making sure your writing looks good on the page/screen

Expert

The font and colors I chose made this piece easy to read--I used the perfect font size and style. Everything is in the right place. Even margins frame the text. This is a finished copy--I'm proud of it!
Practitioner

More bullets, numbers, or headings would help. My margins and white space are inconsistent. This is a draft copy. My illustrations aren't always in the right spot. I'm getting a little carried away using different fonts and colors.
Apprentice

My spacing is uneven and it's confusing to the reader. Things are just too crowded or small to make sense.
Novice

This looks more like notes than a finished piece. It's too confusing to read--I'm getting a headache!
