The Nine-Point Matrix

Current Clairemont High School English Department Rubric presented in a matrix-style format. * Note that the descriptions corresponding to each level within the criterias are presented verbatim from the original rubric. Also note that the "2-1" level description was the only area presented as a brief paragraph in the original rubric, which lacked bullets for each criteria--effort was made to divide descriptors for this category into the appropriate designations.

	9-8 = A Superior Paper (N/A)	7-6 = A Strong Paper (N/A)	5 = An Adequate Paper (N/A)	4-3 = An Underdeveloped Paper (N/A)	2-1 = An Unacceptable Paper (N/A)
Prompt	9-8 = A Superior Paper Focuses entirely on the prompt.	7-6 = A Strong Paper Focuses mainly on the prompt.	5 = An Adequate Paper Focuses mostly on the prompt.	4-3 = An Underdeveloped Paper May not adequately address the prompt.	2-1 = An Unacceptable Paper Although the writer may have made some effort to respond to the prompt, the views presented have little clarity or coherence.
Thesis	9-8 = A Superior Paper Includes a clear, thoughtful, highly effective thesis.	7-6 = A Strong Paper Includes a clear and effective thesis.	5 = An Adequate Paper Includes a thesis, although it may be generic or simplistic.	4-3 = An Underdeveloped Paper May include a thesis, but it is weak and underdeveloped.	2-1 = An Unacceptable Paper Unacceptably brief or incomplete; poorly written.
Organization/Structure	9-8 = A Superior Paper Is clear, logical and purposeful in its organization and structure.	7-6 = A Strong Paper Is clear and logical in its organization and structure.	5 = An Adequate Paper Is basic and predictable in its organization, and may lack one or more elements of essay structure.	4-3 = An Underdeveloped Paper Lacks consistent organization and structure, and may be illogical, hard to follow, or unclear.	2-1 = An Unacceptable Paper Unacceptably brief or incomplete.
Evidence	9-8 = A Superior Paper Contains specific evidence (also called concrete detail or fact) that is carefully chosen and effectively supports the thesis, mostly through use of direct quotations.	7-6 = A Strong Paper Contains evidence (also called concrete detail or fact) that effectively supports the thesis, mostly through use of direct quotations.	5 = An Adequate Paper Contains evidence (also called concrete detail or fact) that generally supports the thesis, and uses some direct quotations.	4-3 = An Underdeveloped Paper Contains little if any evidence; evidence may not directly relate to thesis or prompt; evidence is not specific or effective.	2-1 = An Unacceptable Paper Unacceptably brief or incomplete.
Citation/MLA Format	9-8 = A Superior Paper Includes evidence (quotes or paraphrase) that is effectively introduced and properly cited.	7-6 = A Strong Paper Includes evidence (quote or paraphrase) that is introduced and properly cited.	5 = An Adequate Paper Includes evidence (quote or paraphrase) that is usually introduced and cited.	4-3 = An Underdeveloped Paper Evidence may not be introduced or cited correctly.	2-1 = An Unacceptable Paper Poorly written.
Analysis/Commentary	9-8 = A Superior Paper Uses commentary (also called analysis) that is deep, complex and demonstrates insightful, thorough understanding; commentary explains and analyzes the evidence. No summarizing in commentary.	7-6 = A Strong Paper Uses commentary (also called analysis) that demonstrates thoughtful understanding; commentary explains and analyzes the evidence. No summarizing in commentary.	5 = An Adequate Paper Uses commentary (also called analysis) that demonstrates some understanding; commentary relates to the evidence, but may be inconsistent or limited. Might include too much summary or too little analysis.	4-3 = An Underdeveloped Paper Uses misguided and/or oversimplified commentary that may repeat or restate the obvious; lacks understanding; commentary is weak and may confuse summary for analysis.	2-1 = An Unacceptable Paper The views presented have little clarity or coherence.
Creativity/Original Thinking	9-8 = A Superior Paper Contains ideas that are original and creative, and demonstrates critical thinking.	7-6 = A Strong Paper Contains some ideas that are original and creative, and demonstrates some critical thinking.	5 = An Adequate Paper Needs more creativity or original thinking; cliched.	4-3 = An Underdeveloped Paper Limited creativity or original thinking.	2-1 = An Unacceptable Paper The views presented have little clarity or coherence and are unacceptably brief or incomplete.
Conventions	9-8 = A Superior Paper Has few, if any, errors in grammar, sentence structure, punctuation, spelling.	7-6 = A Strong Paper May contain some errors in grammar, sentence structure, punctuation, spelling, but errors do not interfere with the reader's understanding.	5 = An Adequate Paper May contain errors in grammar, sentence structure, punctuation, spelling, that may interfere with the reader's understanding.	4-3 = An Underdeveloped Paper Contains too many errors in grammar, sentence structure, punctuation, spelling, which might interfere with the reader's understanding.	2-1 = An Unacceptable Paper Poorly written on several counts, including many distracting errors in grammar, punctuation and spelling.
Language/Sentence Fluency	9-8 = A Superior Paper Uses vocabulary, word choice, and language that are precise, powerful, mature, and not repetitive (uses formal academic language).	7-6 = A Strong Paper Uses vocabulary, word choice, and language that are appropriate, mature, and not repetitive (uses academic language).	5 = An Adequate Paper Uses vocabulary, word choice, and language that are generally appropriate, mature, and not repetitive (uses academic language).	4-3 = An Underdeveloped Paper Uses elementary vocabulary, poor word choice, and language that is generally inappropriate, immature, or repetitive (uses slang or informal language).	2-1 = An Unacceptable Paper Poorly written on several counts.
