Student has used allocated time to prepare, has notes, prepared rebuttals, stays focused on topic.

Excellent

Student is completely prepared and has obviously rehearsed. Stays on topic all (100%) of the time.
Good

Student seems well enough prepared but might have needed a couple more rehearsals. Stays on topic most (99-90%) of the time
Sufficient

Student is somewhat prepared, but it is clear that rehearsal was lacking. Stays on topic some (89%-75%) of the time.
Poor

Student does not seem at all prepared to present. It was hard to tell what the topic was.
Content and Organization

Minimum of 1 argument, understanding of the motion/topic, follows debate structure.

Excellent

Shows a full understanding of the topic, has 2+ arguments and is organized throughout speech.
Good

Shows a good understanding of the topic and basic comprehension of different aspects, has 1+ argument and a well organised speech.
Sufficient

Shows a basic understanding of parts of the topic with simple acknowledging different aspects, has 1 argument.
Poor

Does not understand the topic very well, argument is unclear and speech is unorganized.
Convincing arguments and rebuttals

Claim, evidence, impact

Excellent

Always (99-100% of time) uses convincing arguments, opinions based on facts and ties evidence back to their position. Rebuttals were clear, relevant and strong.
Good

Mostly (80-98%) uses convincing arguments.
Rebuttals could have been stronger, more relevant and/or clear.
Sufficient

Sometimes (70-80%) convincing, mostly sentiments.
Rebuttals were mediocre, lacking strength, relevance and/or clarity.
Poor

Is rarely convincing or presents mere sentiments, emotionally based opinions unsupported by facts.
Rebuttals were non-existent or poor quality.
Participation

Participated in the debate practice rounds and the midterm assessment.

Excellent

Full participation throughout the debate practice rounds, in preparation for the final round and during the final round.
Good

Good participation throughout the debate practice rounds, in preparation for the final round and during the final round.
Sufficient

Participated half the time during debate practice rounds, in preparation for the final round and during the final round.
Poor

Participated about 20% of the time.
