Student can:
-with support copy a sentence starter
-with support copy ideas to add to the sentence starter (teacher generated ideas)
Level 2

Students can:
-copy with some difficulty a sentence starter
-add words to the end of the sentence starter. Often the sentence is incomplete or does not make sense.
Level 3

Student can:
-copy a sentence starter
-add original ideas to the sentence starter to complete the sentence independently.
Level 4

Student can:
-copy a sentence starter
-add original ideas to the sentences starter to complete the sentence independently.
-generate a simple sentence independently without the aide of a sentence starter.
Spelling and Word Use

Level 1

Student demonstrates:
-very limited understanding of spelling
-copying words off of the board, but rarely attempts words independently.

-some inventive spelling for unfamiliar words. Beginning and ending sounds sometimes match the word, but not always.

-inventive spelling for unfamiliar words, paying close attention to beginning and ending sounds.

-uses the classroom environment for vocabulary and word choice.

-inventive spelling for unfamiliar words, paying close attention to beginning and ending sounds. He/She also includes some vowel sounds as well.

-sometimes uses periods and capitals.

Student uses:
-periods and capitals properly most of the time.

-periods and capitals properly. He/She is beginning to use other forms of punctuation as well such as the question mark or exclaimation mark.
