Students will perform their required solo, scale, and demonstrate improv to the best of their abilities.

Scale Bb Blues	Exemplary The student is able to play the Bb Blues scale, as well as other Blues scales.	Proficient The students is able to play the Bb Blues scale.	Developing The student is able to play most of the Bb Blues scale and/or plays it crudely.	Beginning The student is not currently able to play the Bb Blues scale.
Improvisation Based on Bb Blues (w/ background recording)	Exemplary The student demonstrates a level of skill and understanding beyond their years. The improvisation is soulful, musical, and inspiring.	Proficient The student demonstrates a high level of skill and understanding. They show confidence.	Developing The student demonstrates some level of skill and understanding, but may seem shy and the attempt may sound crude.	Beginning The student is unable to demonstrate any improvisational skills or refuses to make an attempt.
Tone	Exemplary The student plays with a full, rich, characteristic tone on all registers of the instrument.	Proficient The student plays with a characteristic tone.	Developing The student exhibits some flaws in production, ie thin tone, or forced sound.	Beginning The student exhibits many production flaws, and is not characteristic of the instrument.
Intonation	Exemplary The student is accurate throughout all ranges and registers.	Proficient The student is accurate, yet may miss adjustments on some notes.	Developing The student has a basic sense of intonation, yet makes no attempt to adjust pitch.	Beginning The student isn't accurate, plays out of tune.
Melodic Accuracy	Exemplary The student plays all pitches accurately.	Proficient The student plays most pitches accurately.	Developing The student plays many pitches inaccurately.	Beginning The student plays numerous inaccurate pitches.
Rhythmic Accuracy	Exemplary The student plays with accurate rhythms throughout.	Proficient The student plays nearly all accurate rhythms, lacks some precision in patterns.	Developing The student plays many rhythms accurately, lacks precision in some patterns.	Beginning The student plays many patterns incorrectly or inconsistently.
Articulation	Exemplary All articulation marks are played near perfectly.	Proficient All articulation marks are played, but not always as effectively as they should be.	Developing Some articulations are played.	Beginning No articulations are played.
Recommendation	Exemplary This student should be in Jazz Studio.	Proficient This student could be in Jazz Studio.	Developing This student will remain in Jazz Band only, but given more practice could be ready for Jazz Studio soon.	Beginning This student needs more work before being considered for Jazz Studio. Practice is a must! Try again next school year.
