Cars, Catapults and Quadratics
This project requires students to construct catapults in order to launch M&Ms at a target. Through data collection, students will determine quadratic equation to model the flight of the M&M. The catapult will be moved to the top of a flat surface where students will use their equation to determine the flight time of the projectile and then estimate the horizontal distance traveled. This estimate will be used to determine where a target should be placed.

Introduction

Poor

No introduction is included.
Fair

Introduction is identified, but no information is provided.
Good

Introduction is included but it is hard to make sense of.
Great

Introduction is included, however it's a bit vague or confusing.
Excellent

Introduction is included which makes sense and explains what this problem is about.
Explanation of Process

Poor

No description of the mathematical process was given. The mathematics is not incorporated and therefore the conclusion is not supported. None of the items a - c are addressed.
Fair

Mathematical process is identified, but no information is provided. Very few of the items a - c are addressed and only superficially.
Good

Mathematical process is included but it is hard to make sense of. Not all items a - c are addressed.
Great

Mathematical process is included, however it's a bit vague or confusing. Items a - c are addressed but are difficult to understand or follow.
Excellent

A mathematical process is explained in depth and is easily understood. The mathematics is incorporated as smoothly and naturally as possible. Items a - c are clearly addressed and easy to follow.
Graph of the Translated Function

Poor

No components of the graph are included or no points are included nor clearly labeled on the graph.
Fair

Three components of the graph are missing. Less than five different points are correctly labelled and included.
Good

Two components of the graph are missing. Less than five different points are correctly labelled and included.
Great

One component of the graph is missing. At least five different points are correctly labelled and included.
Excellent

Graph includes a title and both axis are labeled appropriately. At least five different points are correctly labelled and included.
Reflection and Possible Errors

Poor

Four or more errors were made. Reflection questions are not addressed.
Fair

Three errors or mistakes were made. Reflection questions are not addressed.
Good

Two errors or mistakes were made. One or more reflection questions are not present.
Great

One error or mistake is evident. All reflection questions are addressed but only superficially without evidence of critical thinking.
Excellent

No errors or mistakes were made. All reflection questions are addressed and the responses are clear and concise. The responses demonstrate a higher level of critical thinking.
Extension Questions

Poor

No extension questions are included in the final product.
Fair

One or more extension questions are missing.
Good

All three extension questions are addressed but the results show evidence of a significant mistakes.
Great

All three extension questions are addressed but the results show evidence of a minor mistake.
Excellent

All three extension questions are addressed and the results are correct.
Conclusion

Poor

No conclusion is provided.
Fair

Conclusion provides little information or is very difficult to make sense of.
Good

Conclusion is confusing or hard to understand.
Great

Conclusion is vague or has some difficult parts to understand.
Excellent

In depth conclusion of the problem is given.
Neatness and Organization

Poor
Fair

The final product appears sloppy and unorganized. It is hard to know what information is being presented.
Good

The work is presented in an organized fashion but may be hard to understand at times.
Great

The work is presented in a neat, clear, organized fashion that is fairly easy to understand. Above average effort.
Excellent

The work is presented in a neat, clear, organized fashion that is undoubtedly easy to understand. Exceptional work.
Participation/Peer Evaluation

Poor

Four or more combined absences or tardies on four or more of the scheduled project days (including the date project is due). This score is also influenced by teacher observations, peer evaluations, and self-evaluations.
Fair

Three combined absences or tardies on three of the scheduled project days (including the date project is due). This score is also influenced by teacher observations, peer evaluations, and self-evaluations.
Good

Two combined absences or tardies on two of the scheduled project days (including the date project is due). This score is also influenced by teacher observations, peer evaluations, and self-evaluations.
Great

One absence or tardy on one of the scheduled project days (including the date project is due). This score is also influenced by teacher observations, peer evaluations, and self-evaluations.
Excellent
