The body paragraphs are unified, but less developed with supporting details OR a lack of connection between the thesis and the support. (lower word count = 250-400)
limited ability

The body paragraphs may not be unified, will likely lack details for support. There is a lack of connection between the thesis and the support. The word count is insufficient (150-300)
non-existent

The essay is confusing due to lack of unity and insufficient details in the body paragraphs.
Coherence and transitions

demonstrates strong ability

The essay has coherence and includes logical transitions within and between paragraphs.
lacking some element

The essay is confusing due to lack of cohesive elements OR lack of transitions, but it is still comprehensible.

The essay has confusing elements due to lack of coherence and may be somewhat incomprehensible.

The essay is incoherent at times due to lack of transitions and/or cohesive elements.

The essay is reasonably free from errors that may reduce clarity or distract from/interrupt the flow of writing.

The essay has problems with verb tenses, agreement, punctuation, word choice, spelling, BUT is still reasonably clear, although the errors may be distracting at times.

The essay has numerous problems and the errors are distracting and stigmatizing. Some sentences may be incomprehensible.

The essay has overwhelming problems with lexical and syntactical choices. This causes difficulty for the reader to understand the message.
Conclusion paragraph

The essay includes a satisfactory conclusion paragraph (including reference to the introduction and advice/prediction.
lacking some element

The essay has a short conclusion paragraph that is less satisfactory. It may simply restate the thesis, or repeat it. The paragraph may only have 2-3 sentences.
limited ability

The conclusion paragraph may only be a single sentence. It likely repeats the thesis with no added meaningful comment. OR it may begin a new topic that would be better suited to a body paragraph.
non-existent

The essay abruptly ends without a conclusion.
