Short Answer Response This rubric helps evaluate student writing, specifically short answer responses to writing prompts.
	Unsatisfactory (F) Responses within this score range show little or not skill in responding to the task. 2 pts	Approaching (D) Responses in this score range show some developing, inconsistent skill in responding to the task. 4 pts	Adequate (C) Essays within this score range demonstrate adequate skill in responding to the task 6 pts	Good (B) Responses in this score range demonstrate competent skill in responding to the task. 8 pts	Excellent (A) Responses within this score range demonstrate effective skill in responding to the task. 10 pts
Content & Completeness 2 pts Students address ALL parts of the question in their response. Their response demonstrates a deep understanding and mastery of the topic.	Unsatisfactory (F) Writing shows little to no understanding of the task. Prompt is barely addressed or not addressed in the answer. There is inadequate information to judge the author's understanding of the matter.	Approaching (D) Writing shows a weak understanding of the task. Prompt is not fully addressed in the answer. Writer is very general and provides little information to judge his/her understanding of the matter.	Adequate (C) Writing shows some understanding of the task. Prompt is addressed but not answered sufficiently. Writer uses generalization and general statements rather than specific details.	Good (B) Writing shows an understanding of the task. Prompt is answered sufficiently in a general manner. Writers provides a few specific details, but could have elaborated further in several places.	Excellent (A) Writing shows clear understanding of task. Prompt is answered correctly with specific details (such as names, dates, titles, events, people).

Organization 1 pts Student's response should be logically organized. Ideas are developed and focus is maintained throughout the essay. Transitions are well integrated into the student's writing.	Unsatisfactory (F) Author has no thesis and is unfocused in his/her writing. Focus on the prompt is maintained through little of the writing. There is little to no evidence of the logical grouping of ideas and if present, an introduction and conclusion are minimal.	Approaching (D) Author has a focus, but no clear thesis. Focus on the prompt is maintained throughout some of the writing. Ideas are logically grouped in parts of the writing, but there is little to no evidence of logical sequencing of ideas. An introduction and conclusion are discernible, but minimal.	Adequate (C) Author as a thesis. Focus on the prompt is maintained throughout most of the writing. Some evidence of logical sequencing of ideas is apparent, but most transitions are simple. The introduction and conclusion are clear and somewhat developed.	Good (B) Author has a clear thesis. Focus on the prompt is maintained. Development of ideas is specific and logical. Ideas are logically sequenced, but simple and obvious transitions are used. There is a clear introduction and conclusion.	Excellent (A) Author has a well developed thesis. A clear focus on the prompt is maintained. Development of ideas is ample, specific, and logical. Ideas are logically sequenced and transitions reflect the author's logic and understanding of the prompt. Transitions are usually integrated into the essay. There is a well developed, effective, and clear introduction and conclusion.

These errors are very distracting and often impede understanding.	Approaching (D) Writing has many errors in grammar, usage, or spelling. These errors are distracting and occasionally impede understanding.	Adequate (C) Writing has several errors in grammar, usage, or spelling. These errors are distracting, but do not impede understanding.	Good (B) Writing has a few errors in grammar, usage, or spelling. These errors are rarely distracting and do not impede understanding..	Excellent (A) Writing has few if any errors in grammar, usage, or spelling.
