Introduction

Does the introduction effectively begin essay, including thesis and preview of main points?

Excellent

The introduction does an excellent job of hooking the reader into the essay. It includes the thesis. A minimum of 3 main points are previewed in the topic sentence.
Good

The introduction simply states topic, has thesis and previews main points, but does not hook reader well. The lead/hook sentence is not readily identifiable.
Fair

Introduction is functional but not exceptional. May have thesis, but does not preview main points appropriately.
Poor

Introduction extremely weak, does not have thesis or preview of main points. Only previews topic.
Thesis Statement

Prompt is stated into a main idea for the essay.

Excellent

Thesis is present and clear with three reasons that support the prompt.
Good

Thesis is present and clearly written with some reasons that support the prompt.
Fair

Thesis is present but doesn't include reasons that support the prompt.
Poor

Thesis is not present or is not clear.
Supporting details

Does each detail support, or tell more about the topic?

Excellent

Each detail supports, or tells more about the topic. follow up sentences provide additional support.
Good

Each detail supports the main idea but there are no follow up sentences.
Fair

Some of the details support the main idea, but there are some that do not.
Poor

The details do not support the main idea.
Logical order

Does the order of the supporting details make sense?

Excellent

The essay is developed in a logical order appropriate to the writer's purpose and readers needs.
Good

Most of the essay is presented in a logical order, and readers should have little trouble following the supporting details.
Fair

The writer attempts to develop the essay in a logical order, but some of the essay may be presented in an order readers may find confusing.
Poor

The supporting details within the essay as a whole are not developed in a logical order.
Transitions (Linking words)

Do linking words, or transition words, connect details so that the paragraph reads smoothly?

Excellent

Transitions are present and effectively direct readers from one example to the next. They exhibit sophistication on the part of the writer.
Good

Transitions are present and direct readers from one example to the next though not to the level of excellent. They may be basic and/or confusing.
Fair

Transitions are present but do not effectively direct readers from one example to the next. They may be basic and/or cofusing.
Poor

Transitions are not present or do not effectively direct readers from one example to the next.
Elaboration

Does each point have good elaboration using techniques we discussed in class?

Excellent

Elaboration is excellent, giving a good explanation of each supporting detail of each main idea topic.
Good

Elaboration is good, giving further explanation of some supporting details of some main idea topics.
Fair

Elaboration is adequate, giving little explanation of supporting details or main idea topics.
Poor

Elaboration is ineffective or not present.
Conclusion

Does the conclusion restate the topic in a new way to tie the details together?

Excellent

The conclusions does an excellent job of summing up or restating the topic and tieing the details together. Conclusion type is readily identifiable.
Good

The conclusion sums up the topic, by restating it, but it does tie the details together. Attempted conclusion type may not be readily identifiable.
Fair

There is an attempt at a conclusion, but it doesn't restate the topic or tie the details together.
Poor

There is no conclusion the essay just ends without summing up or restating the topic. It doesn't tie the the details together.
Style/Voice

Has the writer shown his/her personality through his writing style?

Excellent

Writer makes excellent use of style, using at least two of the five types of imagery, vivid verbs and juicy words.
Good

Writer makes good attempt at exploring style, using one type of imagery, attempts at vivid verbs and juicy words.
Fair

Writer has little attempt at individual style, leaving writing dry and boring
Poor

Writer has no attempt at personal style, leaving writing extremely bland.
Grammar and Mechanics

Does the paper indicate that the writer has control of the rules of spelling, grammar and mechanics

Excellent

The paragraph contains no errors in usage, spelling, and mechanics.
Good

The paragraph contains 1 or 2 errors in usage, spelling and mechanics.
Fair

The paragraph contains 3 to 5 errors in usage, spelling and mechanics.
Poor

The paragraph contains 6 or more errors in usage, spelling and mechanics.
Inclusion of required elements

2 rough drafts, one with peer comments, revision sheet, final draft

Minus 2 points for each missing element
