Fair

The student has an incomplete understanding of the topic and/or misconceptions about some o the information. However, the student maintains a basic undertanding of the topic.
Good

The student has a complete understanding of the information important to the topic but not in great detail.
Exemplary

The students has a complete and detailed understanding of the information important to the topic.
Essay Structure

Intro Paragraph, 3 Body Paragraphs, Conclusion, Transition words/phrases

Poor

Missing 1 or more paragraphs, no transition words used to help flow of essay
Fair

All paragraphs are present, but essay is choppy because few transitions are present
Good

All paragraphs are present and in correct order, some transition words/phrases are used, essay still lacks flow in some parts
Exemplary

All paragraphs present with at least 5 sentences each, frequent use of transition words in all parts so that essay flows nicely
Persuasion

Does the essay persuade the reader to agree with the thesis?

Poor

Argument lacks support and/or coherence to persuade reader
Fair

Some aspects (1 body paragraph) of the argument are convincing and supported with evidence, but not all, attempts at a clear thesis are evident. Reader is not completely persuaded.
Good

Most aspects (2 body paragraphs) of the argument are convincing and supported with evidence, but not all, thesis states argument. Reader is persuaded.
Exemplary

All aspects (3 body paragraphs) of the argument are convincing and supported with ample evidence, thesis states argument clearly. Reader is persuaded.
