Poetry	Proficient Used two poems. The inclusion of the poems makes sense and flows well with the story.	Capable Used two poems. The inclusion of the poems in the story is somewhat clear, at times it is difficult for reader to clearly understand the purpose of the poetry.	Maturing Use of poetry is unclear, and it is therefore difficult for the reader to understand the story.	Developing No use of poetry is present in the short story.
Point of View	Proficient Point of view is clear, use of first person, or third person is easily detected by the reader.	Capable Point of view somewhat clear, use of first or third person is hard to identify, and there are inconsistencies in point of view.	Maturing Point of view is unclear at times, shifts in dialogue (first or third) hard for reader to detect. Reader struggles to identify point of view.	Developing Point of view is not clear. Reader is unable to identify point of view at all in piece.
Characterization	Proficient The character is clearly developed.	Capable The character is somewhat developed, but there are inconsistencies.	Maturing The character is barely developed.	Developing There is no character development.

Capable There are few puctuation, spelling and/or grammar errors. The writer has attempted to write in paragraphs.	Maturing There are some punctuation, spelling, and/or grammar errors. The writer has attempted to write in paragraphs.	Developing There are many punctuations, spelling, and/or grammar errors. The writer has not attempted to write in paragraphs.
