A
Marshals good evidence to support claims and deftly analyzes that evidence. The paper does a good job of showing the evidence through good use of quotes, rather than just telling or summarizing the evidence
B
Has good evidence to support claims, but may lack a key a few key quotations. Analysis is good but might be a little weak at times
C
Has some good evidence, but often tends to summarize evidence or not have enough of it. Analysis is weak and not deftly used to advance claims
D
Not enough evidence or summarizes most of it. Does not analyze evidence nearly enough to support claims

Not nearly enough evidence from the book. Seems to suggest that student has not read the book at all.
Holistic
A
Overall, the paper is well written, logically organized, persuasively argued, and well thought out. Gives evidence that the student read the material, deeply thought about it, analyzed it and planned out the paper
B
Overall, the paper is solid, but not flawless. Generally well written, logically organized and well argued. But it may lack some persuasiveness, or a sense that it was well thought out and planned. May have some unclear points or arguments
C
Overall, the paper is good, but certainly not flawless. Good writing, with some room for improvement. May be well organized and argued. But combined with some mistakes, it lacks a well thought out, persuasive agenda and demonstrates that the student did not put enough time or effort into it
D
Overall, the paper had potential, but suffers from a lot of mistakes, and from a lack of planning or effort. Has good sections or bright points, but is not clear or cohesive enough, nor is it persuasive or well argued. Sources need to be read deeper, and the paper needed more planning and thought
F
Overall, the paper demonstrates that the student did not read, did not read deeply enough, and/or did not plan or organize the paper. Needs much more thought and depth of analysis.
