Meaning-Making/Close Reading Identifies and explains significant ideas found in the text. Ideas are original and insightful.	Needs Improvement Ideas and explanations are evident and may be plausible but remain at the literal level or ideas and explanations may be indiscernible and/or lacking detail from the text to properly support.	Proficient Ideas and explanations are clear and convincing. More detail may be needed to thoroughly support statements about the text. The analysis is competent, but more general.	Advanced Ideas and explanations are incisive, intuitve, profound and properly supported with specific references to text. The analysis is fully developed, focused, and compelling.
Making Connections/Reflection Reflects on ideas by offering judgments on impact of text when considering thought questions. And/or makes connections to self, other literature and the world.	Needs Improvement Reflections/connections are either off-track or obvious and seemingly pertinent but not developed.	Proficient Reflections/connections are effective and probing but need development. The evidence is clear but not very persuasive.	Advanced Reflections/connections are meaningful, unique and developed sufficiently. The evidence is persuasive, specific, and well-chosen.
Organization Responds with clarity and focus. Sophisticated word choice and vivid language.	Needs Improvement Response is disjointed and needs transitions and a consistent focus.	Proficient Response is mostly organized but may benefit from transitions and/or a more consistent focus. The writing is relatively clear and coherent. Formatting MLA format, min. 1 250-300 words,	Needs Improvement Student may or may not utilize MLA format, barely meets the minimum word count and/or greatly exceeds the maximum.
