Statement of Challenge

Excellent

Is clear, precise, states the essays central point and the author's assertion about the topic. It will also state the main points to be covered without announcing the topic.
Above Average

Adequately states the topic and assertion towards the topic.
Proficient

States the topic and the assertion towards the topic; may be broad, too vague, or refers to the title
Underdeveloped

Vaguely states the main point and/or does not have the author's assessment. Is broad; is a statement of fact; or refers to the title of the essay
Unacceptable

Does not state the main point of the essay; is a statement of fact; very broad; refers to the title of the essay

Excellent

Creates an interest in the essay. The reader want to continue reading. Includes the thesis and has an effective lead-in (hook your audience).

Includes the thesis and an effective lead-in. Creates an interest in the essay.

Refers to the topic and assertion presented in the thesis, summarized the main points of the essay and ends the essay with a clear idea of which adults helped them.

Proficient

Refers to the topic and assertion presented in the thesis, ends the essay with a conclusion and mentions the names of the adults who helped them.
Underdeveloped

Refers to the topic or assertion presented in the thesis. Re-states the main points of the essay verbatim. Does not say how the adults helped them with their challenge.
Unacceptable

Is merely a re-statement of the thesis or main idea. Does not mention the names of the adults helping them.
Mehanics

Agreement of subject and verb; proper tense;correct sentence structure.

Excellent

Contains no grammar errors.
Above Average

Contains very few errors in essay.
Proficient

Contains some errors.
Underdeveloped

Contains several errors of grammar.
Unacceptable
