This rubric is aimed at evaluating the PERFORMANCE of a lab experiment, rather than the REPORT. (I do not require a formal report for most labs - but would use a separate rubric for scoring one if I did)

Group Performance	Novis Scientist Student attempts to do lab without reading or following directions or is unable to work with the group, disregards safety, does not clean up.	Apprentice Scientist Student needs constant assistance due to trouble working with group, may need constant reminders of safety, may leave materials out.	Practicing Scientist Student works interdependantly with the group to follow written directions, may make minor safety infractions. Student cleans up as directed.	Expert Scientist Student works interdependantly with the group to follow all directions and adheres to all safety rules, cleans up as directed
Purpose & Background Research	Novis Scientist Student answers are incomplete and inaccurate for both the purpose and the background information.	Apprentice Scientist Student did not explain what they expect to learn. OR Background research did not show basic knowledge of chemical changes or physical properties.	Practicing Scientist Student did not complete what they expected to learn. OR Background information was complete and well written but lacked use of scientific vocabulary to explain concepts.	Expert Scientist Student described what they expected to learn. Student wrote a well thought out purpose. Background research was complete and well written using scientific vocabulary.
Observations Data Table	Novis Scientist Required work is incomplete and inaccurate.	Apprentice Scientist Students partially record data and show lack of accuracy/care in making observations and recording data.	Practicing Scientist Students completes data tables completely and accurately. A few inaccurate or vague observations are recorded.
