Engaging

A

The writer uses one of the following methods to engage the reader:

The writer's introduction is not engaging, but he/she used one of the engaging strategies

The writer's introduction is engaging, but he/she may NOT have used one of the engaging strategies

The introduction is NOT engaging and the writer did NOT use any of the engaging strategies.
Conventions

A

The writing contains little or no errors in spelling, punctuation, and grammar usage
B

The writing contains some errors in spelling, punctuation, and grammar -- but the errors do NOT have an effect on the story.
C

The writing contained multiple errors in spelling, grammar, and punctuation -- but the errors do NOT interfere with the story.
D

The writing contained multiple errors in spelling, grammar, and punctuation -- AND the errors interfere with the story.
Structure

A

The writing has proper structure and a clear THEME. The writing also shows all the elements of a story: Theme, Plot, Conflict, Rising Action, Climax, Falling Action, and Resolution
B

The writing has good structure, but the writer may have left out one or two of the elements of a story.
C

The writing has good structure, but the writer may have left out MANY of the elements of a story.
D

The writing has poor structure, and the writer may have left out MANY or ALL of the elements of a story.
Conclusion

A

The conclusion is strong, and shows a resolution of the Narrative's conflict.
B

The conclusion is weak, but it still shows resolution of the story's conflict.
C

The conclusion is weak, and does NOT resolve the story's conflict to the reader's satisfaction.
D

no conclusion.
