The character is clearly portrayed in some way using both "showing" and "telling" techniques. The character is realistic and developed. (realistic does not mean the main character(s) cannot be magical or otherworldly, but we need to be able to identify with/relate to him/her/them in some way.)

The character is basically developed in some way. The character is somewhat realistic, but inconsistent. Traits are somewhat developed.

The character is barely developed.

The story is extremely developed and thorough without being verbose. It is clear all aspects of plot structure are covered. (exposition, inciting incident, rising action, climax, etc.)

Short story is typed and is 2 or more pages, double-spaced in 12-point, Times New Roman font. Title is present, but may not be unique. Some errors in grammar and mechanics.

Short story neatly written, but is less than 2 pages. No title. Many errors in grammar and mechanics.

Sloppy hand-written copy; without a title and is not more than 1 page. A vast amount of errors in grammar and mechanics.
Dialogue

Excellent

Story uses dialogue that is clear and correctly punctuated. Dialogue is very easy to follow. Reader can accurately tell who is speaking and when there is a shift in the speaker.

Story somewhat uses dialogue that is clear and attempted to punctuate it correctly. Dialogue is somewhat easy to follow and you can mostly follow the shift in speakers.
Fair

Use of dialogue is not consistent or clear and punctuation is often incorrect. It is often hard to follow the dialogue and shifts in speakers.

There is no use of dialogue and/or punctuation is incorrect, or cannot follow dialogue because it is written incorrectly. There are no shifts in speakers.
