Thesis

Good

The argument for the essay is clear and concise. From the first paragraph alone, the reader can understand what the essay will be about
Fair

The author's argument is fairly clear. The argument is still a little cloudy but for the most part, stays on topic and states what the paper will be about
Poor

Does not identify an argument and has little or no thesis statement. The reader has almost no idea what the paper will be about after the first paragraph
Body Paragraphs

Good

Each body paragraph is meaningful to the essay and ties back to the main thesis stated in the beginning of the essay. Every piece of evidence is backed up with information and adds to the main purpose of the paper
Fair

The author's argument is semi-well structured. Not all pieces of evidence tie back to the thesis statement. Evidence is compelling but may also lose the reader's attention every once in a while
Poor

The evidence used in the essay is very loosely tied to the thesis statement and rarely if ever refers back to the thesis statement. Reader's attention was lost multiple times throughout the paper
Grammar and Mechanics

Good

1-2 grammatical errors throughout the entire essay. The grammar used is sophisticated and keeps the reader interested. No cliches
Fair

3-5 grammatical errors throughout the entire paper. The grammar within the essay is well used but some could use work or restating. No cliches
Poor

More than 5 grammatical errors. The grammar is not sophisticated and needs a lot of work. May use some cliches throughout the essay
Organization

Good

Essay remains on topic throughout the entire piece. Each paragraph flows nicely from one to another. Each paragraph is logically placed and equally contributes to the essay as a whole. Sentence structure requires no additional work.
Fair

Essay remains on topic throughout the entire piece. Paragraphs mostly transition nicely from one to another but may have a few awkward changes. Sentence structure is good for the majority of the essay
Poor

Essay may stray off topic from the main idea. Paragraphs do not flow from one to the next and lack topic sentences. Sentences structure is poor and needs work
