Formatting

Not Sufficiently in line with Expec

The piece is typed, but is handed in appearing messy, wrinkled, and with grease spots from lunch. It does not look professional.
Approaching Expectations

The piece is typed, but something is not quite right: something is missing from the heading, the printer was running out of ink, the font does not meet with directions, etc. It is almost there.
Meeting Expectations

The piece is typed with the student's name, and the date and title, the correct font and spacing. The whole piece is handed in unwrinkled and stapled if necessary.
It looks spectacular.

Deadlines

Not Sufficiently in line with Expec

The student is not ready to hand in the work, but has a legitimate excuse; however, no attempt was made to negotiate the deadline with the teacher until the last minute.
Approaching Expectations

The student walked into class with the assignment obviously complete, but either unprinted, unstapled or otherwise not quite ready to hand in right away.
Meeting Expectations

This author walked into class with this piece complete, printed, stapled and ready to hand in. There were no last minute scrambles. The job was done exactly on time. If there was a legitimate reason for the assignment being late, the student negotiated with the teacher in advance of class.

Spelling and Punctuation

Not Sufficiently in line with Expec

This paper continues to have numerous spelling, punctuation and capitalization errors that have been pointed out on the author's previous work. The author needs to amp up on proof-reading. It does count!
Approaching Expectations

This paper contains several spelling, punctuation, and capitalization errors on each page. It appears that there was not enough time to thoroughly proof-read the piece.
Meeting Expectations

This paper was run through spell-check, but still has some spelling, punctuation, and capitalization errors. The author needs to do the final proofing him/herself or ask someone they trust to do it instead.
Above Expectations

This paper was carefully proof-read before being handed in either by the writer or by someone who did the work for the writer. The paper has no spelling errors, punctuation, or capitalization errors.
Dialogue

Not Sufficiently in line with Expec

If this piece contains dialogue, there is significant difficulty with both paragraphing and punctuation.
Approaching Expectations

If this piece contains dialogue, it is correctly paragraphed, but has numerous punctuation mistakes or the "who saids" are incorrectly placed or labled.
Meeting Expectations

If this piece contains dialogue, it is perfectly paragraphed and almost perfectly punctuated.
Above Expectations

If this piece contains dialogue, it is correctly paragraphed and punctuated. No discussion.
Grammar and Sentence Structure

Not Sufficiently in line with Expec

There is still a lot of editing that needs to take place before the teacher can assess what might be areas where the student needs instruction. There are a lot of typos.
Approaching Expectations

Grammar and usage remain inconsistent, with mistakes that have been noted previously on previous pieces of writing. In addition there are several typos.
Meeting Expectations

Grammar and usage is usually correct. Only 1 or 2 typos. There are not a lot of errors that have been noted on the author's previous work.
Above Expectations

All the sentences are complete and contain proper grammar and usage. Attention to such details add to the clarity and meaning of the piece.
