Fair

Title and introduction adequately set up the essay, but may lack creativity. Essay feels short on content or repetitive, not enough depth to argument. May rely too heavily on other sources.
Good

Adequate title. Opener recognizes opposing view, but either too much / too little time is spent summarizing the opposition. Essay close to required length, but may come up slightly short.
Excellent

Inviting title. Very well-developed opener that alerts the reader that the author is writing against an opposing view. Meets 4-page min. or goes beyond; writing is insightful.

Excellent

Fair

Structure of the paper is difficult to follow. Transitions need improvement. Conclusion is missing, or if provided, does not flow from the body of the paper.
Good

Structure is mostly clear and easy to follow. Transitions are present. Conclusion is logical but may be too simple.
Excellent

The structure of the paper is clear and easy to follow. Transitions are mature and graceful. Conclusion is logical, substantive, and flows from the body of the paper.
Style & Voice

Good

Writing is clear, and author expresses him/herself appropriately, given the assignment. Sentences have varied structure but may lack expressiveness at times.
Excellent
