Photosynthesis Beads Assessment
In groups, students use colored beads and pipe cleaners to build a physical model representing the photosynthesis equation (6CO2 + 6H2O + light -> C6H12O6 + 6O2). They must present their model to another group and answer at least 3 questions from either other classmates or the teacher about what they have discovered thus far.

Creation Knowledge

Poor

Uses very vague terms and put very little effort into distinguishing what beads represent what parts of the photosynthetic chemical equation.
Good

Uses vague terminology and put in some effort into distinguishing what beads represent what parts of the photosynthetic chemical equation. Labelling was attempted.
Excellent

Uses specific terminology and puts in max effort into distinguishing what beads represent what parts of the photosynthetic chemical equation. Labelling was used well.
Presentation to other group

Poor

Students put little effort into their presentation (only briefly mentioned the roles of each step in photosynthesis, did not clarify the differentiation of the bead color/type, did not engage the listener).
Good

Students put some effort into their presentation (mentioned the roles of each step in photosynthesis but did not go into much detail, clarified some of the differentiation of the bead color/type, and somewhat engaged the listener).
Excellent

Students put max effort into their presentation (Identified each of the roles of each step in photosynthesis, clarified all of the differentiation of the bead color/type, and were very engaging to the listener).
Content Knowledge Through Questioning

Poor

Students could not answer direct questions from students and did not answer teacher with any prior knowledge of what they displayed.
Good

Students could answer direct questions from students and could answer teacher with some prior knowledge of what they displayed.
Excellent

Students were able to answer questions from students using high-level vocabulary and could explain misconceptions to the teacher both verbally and through demonstrations.
