The main character(s) is/are realistic and developed. The reader can easily picture the character. The writer uses a broad range of synonyms and character traits to show a complete description.

The character(s) is/are realistic, but inconsistently so. Traits are somewhat developed. Character is well described and some synonyms are used as well as different character traits.

The character is developed very little. There are a couple synonyms or traits describing the character.

Character is not developed towards the story. Writer shows a repetition of words and adjectives to try and describe the character.
Plot
Level 4
The story is extremely developed and thorough. The writer has put forth a lot of detail into their story.

The story is developed somewhat. The plot is evident in the story and can be clearly understood.

The story is somewhat developed but rambles with sentences. More detail to develop the story is needed.

The story could use more development. The plot is misunderstood and needs detail.

Short story has a clear problem and solution. The writer explains many issues that lead to an overall existing problem with a solution.

The writer has demonstrated good understand of problem vs solution but could use a bit more clarity.

Short story has developed a well written problem with no clear complications. The resolution is unclear.
Level 1
The problem in the short story is unclear with little or no complications.The resolution is unclear
Spelling and conventions
Level 4
Writer has demonstrated an excellent spelling and grammar use.
Level 3
Writer has demonstrated a good sense of grammar and spelling use.
Level 2
The writers grammar and spelling is okay but could use some work.
Level 1
The writer needs improvement on effective uses of grammar and spelling.
