	Excellent 20 pts	Good 15 pts	Fair 10 pts	Poor 10 3 pts
Introduction/Thesis Statement	Excellent Very well developed introduction and thesis statement: engages the reader.	Good Introduction and thesis statement create interest and are fairly well developed, but needs more engaging language.	Fair Does not give accurate and complete information,	Poor Lacks a discernible thesis statement.
Body Paragraphs	Excellent Clearly focused topic sentence. Details in the paragraphs are clear and specific.	Good Each paragraph relates to the thesis statement.	Fair There are details, but they are not clear, specific, and vivid. Or does not relate to the thesis statement.	Poor There are no apparent topic sentences for each paragraph. Confusing language.
Conclusion	Excellent The concluding paragraph effectively unifies the essay.	Good The concluding paragraph unifies the essay, but needs more engaging or interesting language.	Fair The concluding paragraph does not unify or "wrap-up" the essay effectively.	Poor There is no conclusion evident in the essay, or the conclusion is not related to the remainder of the essay.
Mechanics	Excellent No errors in punctuation, spelling, grammar, or capitalization.	Good A few minor errors in punctuation, spelling, grammar, or capitalization.	Fair A few errors in punctuation, grammar, spelling, and capitalization that are distracting.	Poor Distracting and major errors in grammar, punctuation, spelling, and capitalization.
MLA Format	Excellent Conforms to MLA formatting guidelines.	Good Conforms to MLA formatting guidelines, but not double-spaced throughout. Or heading is incorrect. Or no pagination	Fair 2 major errors in formatting.	Poor Does not conform to MLA Formatting guidelines.
