Composition

Balanced, repetition, contrast, emphasis, considers whole paper.

Level 1

The objects do not fill the page completely. Objects are placed randomly - feels messy, or off balanced. The composition has not been considered. Less then three objects.
Level 2

Two to Three objects fill the page. Items are somewhat arranged together.
Level 3

Thee or Four detailed objects shown. Objects are arranged strategically.
Level 4

Three or more very detailed objects are shown and strategically placed to show a relationship between them.
Proportion and Space

Use of sight measurement, overlap, positive negative space.

Level 1

Few of the objects are proportionally correct from height to width. There is no overlapping or consideration of negative spaces / background.
Level 2

Most of the objects are proportionally correct from height to width. There is some overlapping of objects and reference to negative spaces between them.
Level 3

All the objects are proportionally correct in reference to each other. They are realistically overlapping with consideration given to spaces between objects.
Level 4

All of the objects are proportionally correct in reference to each other and the background. Work illustrates sensitivity to spaces between and around objects.
Shape, Value and Texture

Use of line & value to create contours that relate to observed objects, shading to show form and texture to heighten reality and visceral response to drawing. Values in negative areas ( background)

Level 1

Few of the objects are shaded or have little to no textural qualities, and most of the objects do no reflect the actual contours of the objects.
Level 2

Objects are shaded and have some textural consideration, although both of these can be brought out more. Some of the objects reflect actual contour of objects. Evidence of a few different shading techniques.
Level 3

Highlights reflect actual highlights from shading, and all of the objects reflect actual contours. Shading techniques used are consistent, and evidence of more then one technique used. There is a range of values, although these could be pushed more. The textures are starting to be realistic.
Level 4

Varied value range of darks, highlights, and mid tones, and all of the objects reflect the actual contour (shape). Uses many different shading techniques to create edges and lines (vs. drawing them) – use eraser as a drawing tool both to create highlights, shapes, and lines. Surface textures are realistic and provide a strong visceral connection to the drawing.
Effort, Care

Worked continuously throughout assigned drawing time, was focused, engaged, demonstrated care of tools, studio and craftsmanship of work.

Level 1

The amount of stray marks, smudges, or paper imperfections, (folds, rips, etc) detracts from the overall appearance of the composition. Art tools were not always put away or used with care. Student was easily distracted by conversations, and or phone.
Level 2

A few stray marks or smudges are evident but do not greatly detract from the overall appearance of the composition. And / or student was sometimes distracted by conversations or phone. Most times student took care of art tools.
Level 3

Presentation of the work is clean and neat with no stray marks, smudges, wrinkles or curled edges of paper. Student
Level 4

Presentation of the work is exemplary. Art tools were well maintained. Student was focused throughout assigned drawing time.
Creativity

Developed several thumbnails to plan a unique still life composition, used pencils to express still-life in a way unique to student.

Level 1

Composition needs to be much more creative, detailed, and original. It does not activate the whole page, or is unbalanced. It does not apply a principle of design well.
Level 2

Composition is somewhat basic and predictable. There is some evidence of thoughtfulness, but lacks understanding of use of entire page.
Level 3

There is some uniqueness to the composition. Evidence of thoughtfulness in using the full page, having balance in composition.
Level 4

Personal style and creativity is evident. Full use of the page, strong considerations of positive and negative space. Uses one or more principles of design well. Work is well thought out and expressive.
