Original African Dance 
Students will create their own dance using movement taught throughout the semester. Students may perform as a solo or duet.

The dancer is unprepared and unsure of the dance moves. There is no sense of timing or direction
Fair

The dancer knows the movement fairly well. The dancer stays with the group and has a fairly good sense of timing and direction. A few mistakes are made.
Good

The dancer knows the movement extremely well. Dancer is confident and does not need to follow anyone else. Dancer has a great sense of timing and direction.
Community

Poor

The dancer did not work well with the community. (lines, moving together, sharing space)
Fair

The dancer worked well within the community. He/she was contributing to the collective flow of the community.
Good

The dancer helped the community by contributing to discussion, bantuba, roda, etc...
Rhythm/Tempo

Poor

Dancer attempts to keep a rhythm, but does not follow the tempo or the beat.
Fair

Dancer show a basic understanding of tempo and beat, but speeds up or falls behind and makes errors in rhythm.
Good

Dancer shows a complete understanding of tempo and beat and stays on the rhythm thoughout the dance.
Effort/Performance

Poor

Student's performance indicates little or no confidence and energy. Most or none of the dance criteria was met.
Fair

Student's performance indicates some confidence. Lacks some of the dance criteria.
Good

All of the student's performance indicates great confidence and energy. All dance criteria was met. The steps and movements chosen are very concise.
Movement Selection

Poor

None of the movements were identifiable. Time constraints not met.
Fair

Dance exceeded or did not meet the time limit within 30 seconds. Some movement identifiable.
Good

Dance met the time limit. Movements were identifiable as movements taught in class
