This is a rubric for scoring all science lab done in class. It does not matter if the lab is hand written or typed on the computer.

Heading /Title/ Question	Level 4 The Heading, title, and question are very specific, clear, and sets the tone for the entire experiment.	Level 3 The heading is correct. The title and question are basic but connects to the experiment.	Level 2 The heading has all the components but in the wrong spots. The title or question are basic but may have errors.	Level 1 The heading and title are not in a proper format or not clear. One or the other may have been omitted.	Level 0 Not present. OR It was provide for you and will not be scored.
Hypothesis	Level 4 The statement is clearly written and contains a detailed scientific explanation.	Level 3 Hypothesis is in a very clear statement; it has a very basic explanation.	Level 2 Hypothesis is in improper format and/or is unclear with no explanation.	Level 1 Minimal effort is demonstrated, or does not answer the question presented.	Level 0 The hypothesis is not included.
Materials/ constant Variables The materials that do not change in an experiment.	Level 4 The material list is complete and detailed.	Level 3 The material list is included with one minor omission.	Level 2 The material list is incomplete with many omissions.	Level 1 The material list has major omissions. little effort is shown.	Level 0 No List is included.
Variables The independent is the one thing that is going to change in a lab. The dependent variable is what is measured/ observed for a change.	Level 4 The independent and the dependent variables are labeled and correctly identified.	Level 3 The independent and the dependent variables are labeled and identified, but it may have issues.	Level 2 The independent or the dependent variables are labeled and identified, but they may have issues.	Level 1 The independent and the dependent variables may not be labeled and identified, and they may have issues.	Level 0 Not listed.
Observations	Level 4 Presented in an appropriate chart table or graph. Includes titles, and is specific, complete, and labeled correctly.	Level 3 There are minor errors or omissions to observations.	Level 2 Improper format and/ or major errors or omissions.	Level 1 Minimal effort is demonstrated, or it does not connect with the question or hypothesis introduced in the experiment.	Level 0 The observations are not included.
Analysis	Level 4 It clearly reflects the observations. The writing is detailed, organized, and fluent.The question is restated, answered, and explained with evidence gathered in the scientific inquiry process.	Level 3 There are minor error or omissions to the data in the analysis. It does not completely reflect the observations. The writing is organized and fluent. The question is restated, answered, and explained with some evidence gathered in the scientific inquiry process.	Level 2 Poor format and/ or major error or omission in the analysis.The question may be restated, or partially answered, and explained with minimal evidence gathered in the scientific inquiry process.	Level 1 Minimal effort is demonstrated.	Level 0 The analysis is not present.
Conclusion	Level 4 Conclusion includes restatement of the hypothesis, and explains whether the observation supports or reject the hypothesis. It explains why with supporting data gained in the experiment.	Level 3 The conclusion has minor error in the restatement of the hypothesis, does not fully explain how the observations related to the hypothesis, or does not confirm nor reject the hypothesis.	Level 2 It has minor omissions in the format and does not clearly relate back to the question or hypothesis.	Level 1 Major error in relating back to the question and the hypothesis. Very basic.	Level 0 The conclusion is not stated.
Presentation of the write- up	Level 4 Impressive with extensive effort and pride taken in the work. Multiple components become the focal point. It may be typed or hand written.	Level 3 Effort and pride is taken to display the components neatly. Some of the features stand out as focal points. It may be typed or hand written.	Level 2 Basic. Some effort is apparent. No real highlighted feature. It may be typed or hand written.	Level 1 Messy, no real pride taken in completing the lab.Your name is present. It may be typed or hand written.	Level 0 No write up done.<BR> No name is present on the lab.
