Colonial Town Covenant Project
Scenario: Carteret and Berkeley have been granted land by Charles II for their support during the civil war. In 1665 they draft the Concession of Agreement, granting freedom of religion and establishing New Jersey. In 1674 Berkeley sells his interest in the West to the Quakers, splitting the colony into East and West. You are part of a group of English colonists that has received permission from Carteret to establish a new town (which will operate as a colony) in his East Jersey. As you will discover, the creation of a new town requires much planning. Everything from by-laws to land ownership must be put in writing before a house, road or fence can be built. The written document outlining the plan for a new town is called a covenant. Below you will find the Concession of Agreement's requirements for drafting a colonial town covenant.
