Introduction - Part 1

Excellent (A Range)

Introduction consists of 5-7 sentences of which the last sentence is a clear thesis statement and the sentences flow throughout the paragraph.
Good (B Range)

Introduction consists of 3-4 sentences of which one is a thesis statement and the sentences flow throughout the paragraph.
Fair (C Range)

Introduction consists of 2-3 sentences of which one is an implied thesis statement, which the reader must 'find', and the sentences have a weak connection throughout the paragraph.
Poor (D Range)

Introduction consists of 1-2 sentences of which one is the thesis statement and the sentences have no connection in the paragraph OR there is no thesis statement in the introduction.

Length of Paper

Excellent (A Range)

Paper is at least 8 full pages when typed, but it is not longer than 8 full pages. This does not include cover page or cited work page.
Good (B Range)

Paper is between 3-4 full pages when typed.
Fair (C Range)

Paper is 1-2 full pages when typed.
Poor (D Range)

Paper is less than 1 full page when typed.
Paragraph Construction

Excellent (A Range)

All paragraphs include introductory sentence, explanations or details, and concluding sentence.
Good (B Range)

Most paragraphs include introductory sentence, explanations or details, and concluding sentence.
Fair (C Range)

Paragraphs included related information but were typically not constructed well.
Poor (D Range)

Paragraphing structure was not clear and sentences were not typically related within the paragraphs.
Conclusion

Excellent (A Range)

Conclusion accurately sums up what is said in the paper and includes a restatement of the thesis sentence. Finally, it clearly leaves reader thinking, offers a solution, or is a call to action.
Good (B Range)

Conclusion sums up what is said in the paper with some gaps in thought and includes a restatement of the thesis sentence. Finally, it attempts to leave reader thinking, offer a solution, or is a call to action.
Fair (C Range)

Conclusion sums up what is said in the paper with many gaps in thought OR does not includes a restatement of the thesis sentence.
Finally, there is little or no attempt to leave reader thinking, offer a solution, or is not a call to action.
Poor (D Range)

MLA Requirements

Excellent (A Range)
