Speak clearly Speak clearly, properly, and politely, and recognize the difference between formal and informal language.	Needs support What the student was saying was hard to understand. The student was not using complete sentences nor formal language to present.	Approaching standard Speaks quietly. Uses a lot of slang. Does not use emotion or excitement. Monotone voice.	Meets standard Speaks using some slang. Uses monotone voice. Uses little emotion or excitement	Exceeds standard Speaks clearly using formal language, emotion, excitement, and pauses when needed.
Participate Participate in group discussion. • Ask and respond to questions from teacher and other group members.	Needs support The student did not answer questions.	Approaching standard The student was not able to answer all of the questions about the story.	Meets standard Answers questions with some degree of accuracy in content with the story.	Exceeds standard Is able to answer questions from the class about the story in content with the story.
Retell your story Retell a story, describing the plot, characters, and setting.	Needs support The student did not explain any of the following: characters, setting, plot.
