CHMS 7th Grade Lab Report Scientific Writing

Use the "Scientific Writing Checklist for Lab Reports" to create your lab report. Each of the eight sections in the checklist will be evaluated to compile an overall 100% classwork/project grade. Use this rubric to help you critique your lab report so that you may get the highest score possible.

Introduction 5 %	Far Below Standard Introduction is absent or incoherent	Below Standard Introduction is absent or not written properly.	Standard Introduction stated but is not clearly focused on what was to be discovered.	Above Standard Purpose stated and clearly explains what was to be discovered.
Hypothesis 5 %	Far Below Standard Hypothesis is not written in "if...then..." format or incoherent	Below Standard Hypothesis is absent or not written in "if...then..." format.	Standard Written in "if...then..." format but needs to predict more clearly what you think the results will be.	Above Standard Written in "if...then..." format and clearly predicts what you think the results will be.
Materials 5 %	Far Below Standard Materials are not properly listed, incomplete, or incoherent	Below Standard Materials are absent or the list is not complete.	Standard List is complete but quantities are not always there or missing completely.	Above Standard List is complete for accurate replication of the experiment. List includes quantities of measurements.
Procedure 10 %	Far Below Standard Procedure is incoherent and not reliable	Below Standard Procedure is absent, needs more steps for the lab to be reliable, or contains incomplete sentences.	Standard Logical sequence with complete sentences but missing some steps from checklist. Explanation is absent that describes the single variable being tested.	Above Standard Written in complete sentences with no steps missing from checklist. At least one procedure diagram is present. Clear explanation is present of single variable being tested.
Data 20 %	Far Below Standard Data table is incorrect	Below Standard Data section is absent, qualitative sentences missing, or quantitative data is missing from a data chart, graph or picture.	Standard Qualitative sentences poorly written or contain inferences. Quantitative data chart, graph or picture lacks proper units or labels. Some calculations are absent or not clearly shown.	Above Standard Well written qualitative sentences with no inferences. Quantitative data chart. graph or picture contain proper units and labels are present. Calculations clearly shown.
Results 20 %	Far Below Standard Results do not accurately reflect the data	Below Standard Absent or contains incomplete sentences.	Standard Sentences are present but provide no clear explanation of data or do not make specific references to the data.	Above Standard Sentences provide clear explanation for the meaning of your data. Specific references are made to the data.
Conclusion 30 %	Far Below Standard The conclusion is incoherent	Below Standard Any statements or explanations are absent or contain incomplete sentences.	Standard The statements are present but demonstrate a surface level understanding of the the concepts being explored.	Above Standard The statements are well reasoned and show critical thinking with deep analysis of the concepts being explored.
Writing Guidelines 5 %	Far Below Standard The report is filled with errors that limit the ability to understand the writing	Below Standard Numerous problems exist with writing style, organization, formatting, scientific vocabulary or spelling/grammar.	Standard Minor problems exist with writing style, organization, formatting, scientific vocabulary or spelling/grammar.
