General poetry rubric

Students will create a poem following the guidelines of their chosen form of poetry. Objectives: 17e. Develop grade-appropriate compositions on student- or teacher-selected topics that include variety in sentence structure (ELA-2-M2) 18b. Develop grade-appropriate compositions by identifying and applying writing processes such as prewriting (e.g., brainstorming, researching, raising questions, generating graphic organizers) (ELA-2-M3) Grade Scale: 15-16 pts.= Advanced 14 pts.= Mastery 13 pts. = Basic 12 pts. = Approaching Basic 11 pts.= Unsatisfactory.

Words spelled correctly You have a dictionary and a thesaurus in your desk. If you don't use them, you are choosing the lower scores.	Advanced All words were spelled correctly. No more than 2 spelling errors.	Mastery Most words were spelled correctly. No more than 5 spelling errors.	Basic Some words were spelled correctly. More than 5 spelling errors.	Approaching Basic Many of the words were spelled incorrectly. Half the poem consists of spelling errors.
Neat Make sure that what you mean to say is actually what you wrote into your poem.	Advanced Poem is neatly written and easy to understand.	Mastery Poem is written but may lack clarity in some places.	Basic Poem is sloppy.	Approaching Basic Poem is too difficult to read.
Illustrations Represent Poem All poems need some kind of illustration or embellishment. Concrete poems, diamante poems, and biopoems should contain lots of color and imagery.	Advanced Poem illustrations are colorful and represent the written ideas.	Mastery Poem has some color and illustrations have some detail.	Basic Poem has few colors and few or no illustrations.	Approaching Basic Poem has no color and no illustrations.
Bonus If you successfully attempted to use a traditional form of poetry you will receive 2 bonus points.	Advanced n/a	Mastery n/a	Basic The student's poem was of a traditional form.
