This paper is about one topic or subject but the ideas are not specific enough to support this topic or subject.

Ideas are not fully developed or explained.

This paper doesn't focus on one topic or subject. The ideas do not relate to each other. The ideas are unclear and not well developed.
Organization

Remember your paragraphs!

This paper is organized so that it highlights the ideas and subjects. The organization in the paper makes it interesting.

This paper is organized in a manner which can be easily read. (Organization doesn't confuse the audience.)

The paper has poor paragraph structure.

This paper lacks a clear sense of direction. The ideas, details, or events are strung together in a loose or random fashion.
Voice

Voice draws the reader in and keeps the readers attention. Writing is for the reader!

This paper speaks directly to the reader. This paper is interesting, compelling, and engaging. The words create memorable pictures and descriptions or arguments for understanding.
Good

Most similes, metaphors, and personifications are original and appropriate.
Almost There

This paper that makes a sincere attempt to engage the reader/audience. The result is pleasant, but is not interesting or compelling.
Fair
Poor

The writing doesn't reflect a personal connection. (The writer does not relate to topic) The writing doesn't involve the reader. The writing has no similes, metaphors or personification.
Word Choice

Use a variety of words.
Remember to use a Thesaurus!!

Excellent

The writer uses "Interesting Words" which convey the intended message in a precise, and natural way. (Reader picks up the energy and is interested). Word choices are original and appropriate.
Good

The words create pictures and descriptions show the reader what is happening rather than just telling.

The writer uses functional words but the paper still lacks "Interesting Words" or energy.
Fair

The vocabulary is developing - some use of grade level vocabulary. The descriptions are not specific enough to paint vivid pictures for the reader.

The writer did not use "Interesting Words" in this paper. The vocabulary is limited. The language is confusing and/or vague.
Sentence Fluency

Use clauses and phrases.
Use complex and compound phrases.

The paper has a good rhythm. Sentences are well built, strong; with varied lengths and structures. The writer uses complex, interesting sentences.

All sentences contain complete thoughts. there are no run-on sentences. The writer uses complex sentences.

The writer uses simple repetitive sentences with an occasional variance...often too flowery or trite. Some sentences should be corrected or divided for flow and impact.

Simple sentences are choppy and the reader can not follow the ideas with fluency. The sentence structure has repetitive patterns. The paper has poor sentence structure with repetitive patterns. Has run on sentences.
Conventions

Correct spelling, punctuation, capitalization, grammar, and verb tense.

Excellent

The paper reflects a good grasp of standard writing conventions. (The use of correct conventions enhances readability.) There is no more than one grammatical or spelling error in the piece.
Good

Grammatical and spelling errors are minimal (two or fewer). Errors do not impact the reader's understanding.
Almost There

Writing conventions mostly enhance readability; but at other times, errors are distracting and impair readability. Grammatical and spelling errors exist but do not significantly impact reader understanding.
Fair
Poor

Errors in spelling, punctuation, capitalization, grammar and usage make the paper difficult to read. Grammatical and spelling errors get in the way of understanding.
