Essay is incomplete, confusing or unrelated to main topic. Content severely undeveloped with no reflection why the event was important or how it changed the writer's attitudes or actions.
Fair

Title and intro adequately set up the essay, but lacks important details about time, place, or character. Essay is too short with no dialogue,
Good

Adequate title. Introduction creates interest and is fairly well developed. Content tells the story well, but lacks examples of dialogue.
Excellent

Appropriate title. Well-developed intro. Meets 2 3/4 -page min. typed and 5- page handwritten or is longer, with thoughtful reflection.
Drafting Process

Structure is mostly clear, but somewhat off the main subject. Logical conclusion.

Structure is reflective in nature but easy to follow. Conclusion is creative and flows from the body of the paper.

Writing is confusing with broken trains of thought and lack of details to explain the important times and places of the event.
Fair

Writing is mostly clear, but sentences may lack variety.
Good

Writing is clear, and author makes an effort to think through the topic in a reflective way. Sentences are varied but lack feelings or responses.
Excellent

Writing is smooth, skillful, easy to understand. Sentences are strong, expressive, varied. Strikes a clear, reflective tone.
Mechanics & Formatting

Poor

Distracting and too many errors in grammar,(fragments and run-on sentences) punctuation, spelling, and capitalization.
Fair

A few errors (fragments, and run-ons) in punctuation, grammar, spelling, and capitalization.
Good

Punctuation, spelling, grammar, and capitalization generally correct with few errors
Dialogue is punctuated and paragraphed correctly (separate paragraph for every speaker).
Excellent

No errors in punctuation, spelling, grammar, or capitalization that distract the reader from the content.
