	Incomplete 0 pts	Poor 5 pts	Fair 7 pts	Good 9 pts	Above and Beyond 10 pts
Dress-Ups	Incomplete There are no Dress-Ups or the Dress-ups are not marked.	Poor The student is missing many dress-ups, and did not follow the minimum rule.	Fair The student is missing a few dress-ups, but showed an effort to follow the minimum rule.	Good The student has satisfied the minimum rule and has at least one of each dress-up in each paragraph.	Above and Beyond The student has more than one of each type of dress-up, has clever use of dress-ups, and/or attempts advanced techniques, such as doubles or invisibles, or decorations.
Sentence Openers	Incomplete There are no Sentence Openers or the Sentence Openers are not numbered.	Poor The student is missing most sentence openers, and did not follow the minimum rule.	Fair The student has some sentence openers, but they are incorrectly used or do not satisfy the minimum rule.	Good Student satisfies the minimum rule and has one of each type of opener in each paragraph (for the most part). Student has at least one example of each opener somewhere in the piece.	Above and Beyond Student has several examples of each type of sentence opener, and uses them skillfully or frequently within the paragraph.
Writing Process	Incomplete The student turns in only one part of the process (example: a "final" draft with no other steps).	Poor The student is missing steps or made little effort to utilize the steps effectively.	Fair The student used all steps of the writing process, but some were ineffective or did not follow the directions.	Good Student used every step of the writing process effectively - Keyword Outline, Drafting, Editing, Revising, and creating a Final Draft. All parts are completed satisfactorily.	Above and Beyond Student used every step of the writing process very effectively, showing effort at every step to use the process to make writing better.

Story	Incomplete Student does not respond to the prompt.	Poor Student does not write a coherent story.	Fair Student attempts to write a story, but it isn't directly related to the pictures.	Good Student writes an effective story from the pictures. Student includes a clever title	Above and Beyond Student is particularly insightful and/or clever in their story. -and/or- Student uses the Title to Clinch the story.
Revising/Editing	Incomplete Student did not use the checklist.	Poor Student made little or no discernible effort to revise and/or edit writing.	Fair Student made some effort to revise and edit their writing, and used most of the checklist.	Good Student made an effort to revise and edit to make their writing better. Student used checklist.	Above and Beyond Student made a great effort (example: multiple re-writes) to make writing better. Student used checklist.
Topic/Clincher	Incomplete Topic/Clincher isn't marked.	Poor Student makes little or no attempt to follow the rule.	Fair Student makes an attempt to follow the rule, but does not do so effectively.	Good Student repeats 2-3 key words in the beginning and end of each paragraph, satisfying the topic/clincher rule.	Above and Beyond Student uses the Topic/Clincher in a clever way to make paragraphs more effective.
Formatting	Incomplete Student does not double-space.	Poor Student makes little or no attempt to format the piece correctly.	Fair Student makes an attempt to format correctly, but may make some mistakes.	Good Student formats piece following the guidelines for typing or handwriting. Piece is neat and legible and easy to read.	Above and Beyond Student goes above and beyond to present a piece that is both visually attractive and easy to read.
